LOST OR STOLEN CREDIT CARDS
A credit card is considered lost or stolen when it is no
longer in the authorized cardholder's control. Here, federal
law limits the cardholder's liability to $50 per credit card
account. This limit is not per card, but, per account. So,
if both you and your wife's credit cards are stolen, and,
they are both the same account, your total liability is $50.
This is regardless of how many unauthorized charges are made
before you notify the credit card company of the loss or
theft. And if you notify your credit card issuer before any
unauthorized charges are made, your liability is nothing.
In any case, you should notify your credit card issuer as
soon as you learn that your credit card is lost or stolen.
This number, which is usually toll free, is clearly marked
on your monthly statement. You should keep this number handy
(preferably not with your credit card), as well as a list of
the account numbers for each card.
